Sizing — the thing that sets the price
Cherries are graded by diameter and expressed in the trade as a row count: the smaller the row number, the larger the fruit. A 10-row cherry is a good commercial fruit. A 9-row is premium. An 8-row or larger is gifting-grade and prices accordingly.
The price spread across those grades is wide — far wider than most buyers expect on a fruit that looks broadly similar in a photograph. Anyone quoting cherries without stating a row grade is not quoting a comparable product, and this is where inexperienced buyers most often get caught.

Chilean cherries price in India
Chilean cherries price in India is driven by row grade first, then by variety, firmness, colour, stem condition, pack format and arrival week. Cherry box price varies with pack size — 2kg and 5kg cartons are standard and are not directly comparable per kilo.
Arrival week matters more on cherries than on anything else we handle. Fruit landing in the third week of December is a different commercial product from identical fruit landing in the second week of January, purely because of what the gifting calendar is doing.

Handling and cold chain
Cherries are carried at around 0 to 1°C, and with cherries speed matters as much as temperature. The fruit begins losing firmness and stem quality from the moment it is picked, and no amount of cold fully arrests it — cold slows the clock, it does not stop it.
This is why part of the Chilean cherry trade moves by air rather than sea when the market and the calendar justify it. Sea freight from Chile is a long voyage for a fruit this perishable, and the difference between a well-managed cherry consignment and a poorly managed one is visible to a consumer at a glance.
Consignments are precooled at origin — rapidly, because field heat is the enemy here — moved under continuous temperature control and condition-checked before release into distribution.
Who buys imported cherries in India
Three channels, and they want different fruit. Gifting and corporate programmes want the largest row grades in presentation packaging and are the least price-sensitive. Modern retail wants consistent 9 and 10-row fruit with reliable weekly arrivals through December and January. Hotels, patisseries and premium food service want firm fruit with good stem presentation for plating. Premium cherries in India are a genuinely segmented market and planning them as one line leaves money on the table.
Supply and pack formats
Supplied in original export cartons, typically 2kg and 5kg, plus presentation and gifting formats where the programme calls for it, to distributors, wholesale traders at Vashi APMC and Azadpur mandi, modern retail chains, gifting companies and HoReCa buyers.
