Why we publish this

Most of what is written about the fruit import business in India is written by people who have never cleared a container. The result is advice that sounds right and falls apart at the port. We import more than 1,500 reefer containers a year across nine origins, and the notes below come out of that work — including the parts that went wrong.

The audience is anyone with a commercial stake in this trade: importers starting out, distributors and retail buyers planning a season, and growers or exporters looking at India as a market.

01

Starting an import business

How to start a fruit import business in India, in practice: what registrations you need before you can move, what the licensing sequence looks like, what capital gets tied up in a first consignment and where new importers most commonly lose money. Fruit import licence requirements in India, an Importer Exporter Code and FSSAI registration for fruit import are the starting points, and getting the order right saves months.

02

Documentation and compliance

Fruit import documentation in India is where consignments stall. A phytosanitary certificate from the origin country's plant protection authority, an import permit where the commodity requires one, certificate of origin, bill of lading, commercial invoice and packing list all have to line up — and a single mismatch between the certificate and the manifest can hold a reefer on the dock while the fruit ages.

03

Duty and landed cost

Fruit import duty in India varies by commodity and by trade agreement with the origin country, and it changes. Rather than publish a number that will be wrong next quarter, these guides explain how to build a landed cost properly: customs duty against the correct HS code, applicable cess and agriculture infrastructure levies, freight, insurance, clearance, cold storage and wastage. Landed cost is the number that matters, and it is rarely the number a new importer calculates first.

04

Cold chain and handling

How fruits are imported to India from a handling perspective — precooling at origin, reefer set points by commodity, controlled atmosphere storage, ethylene segregation, and the arrival leg where most avoidable loss actually happens. Our cold chain page covers the technical detail; these notes cover what goes wrong in practice.

05

Seasonal and market notes

Origin-by-origin observations as seasons open and close: what a South African citrus crop is shaping up to do, when Chilean cherries are committing, how a Shine Muscat season is pricing. Useful if you are planning a shelf rather than reading history.
