Grapefruit is carried at around 10 to 13°C — considerably warmer than mandarins or oranges and much warmer than apples or grapes. It is unusually susceptible to chilling injury, and fruit held at temperatures suitable for other citrus arrives pitted and broken down.
This is a genuine operational trap. A container mixing grapefruit with other citrus at a single set point will damage one of them. Grapefruit consignments are handled at their own temperature and condition-checked before release.
